Cool Video: Sanibel Rays

cownose raw eating oysters

Cownose rays primarily eat shellfish. This aquarium bound ray is sucking oysters.

I often see Cownose Rays gliding in formation along the shore with their wing-tips lifting out of the water. Sometimes one will jump into the air and hit the water with a loud slap. These rays do have stingers, but they are not at all aggressive. As a kid, my friends and I chased and tried catching them with dip nets. Fortunately, we were never successful.

Watch this great video of Cownose Rays at Sanibel’s Lighthouse Beach that I found on Youtube.
