As the holiday rush settles, and our homes return to their normal state of being, it’s always a good time to survey your home for ways to make improvements, big or small. I enjoy peeking at the BEHR color trends each year to see what’s “hot”, and how designers are implementing these hues into home improvements and stylish decor.
Actually this year’s 2018 Color of the Year is more on the “cool” side, with a soothing mix of blue, gray and green that makes up the color named: In The Moment. This color is great for Sanibel homes, as it has a calm, coastal vibe to it, without being loud or over-the-top “beachy.” It looks great on your kitchen walls, against your granite countertops, or even on your front door, against your light-colored exterior paint or metal roof.
Besides paint color, another easy update for your home in 2018 is your old decor and furnishings. It’s 2018… time to let go of the old seashell lamp and floral-print couch from the 70’s. Even if you mainly use your Sanibel home as a vacation rental, your renters will LOVE to see more modern furnishings and decor. In fact, it will make your home stand out amongst the many other old and outdated rentals on island.
If you’re feeling really creative, try implementing one of this year’s trending colors into a nice backsplash in your kitchen or bathroom. You’d be surprised at how easy it is to instal your own tile backsplash now-a-days with the help of home improvement stores and a few DYI videos online!
Other Updates That Provide Value To Your Island Property
Landscaping. We tend to spend more time and effort making the inside of our homes look great, and sometimes forget the importance of exterior appearance. We’re guilty of it ourselves! That’s why we’ve hired a wonderful landscape architect to give our yard a total make-over for 2018.
Power washing. You’ll be amazed how great your home looks under that layer of sea salt and grim. You’ll also be amazed at how easy it is to do yourself by simply renting a pressure washer from any home improvement store. The exterior walls of your home, your paved driveway, and even your pool deck can benefit from a good cleaning.
Outdoor showers. I feel like every home on Sanibel can benefit from this easy installation. Even if your home isn’t “steps from the beach” or doesn’t have a pool, living on Sanibel, you’re bound to bring home sand from the beach. A simple outdoor spigot is especially great for rental homes, and actually makes your home feel more “beachy.”
Outdoor Ceiling Fans. I suppose your screened lanai or back porch is likely your favorite space in your Sanibel home. Why not replace that old swivel, standing fan with an actual outdoor ceiling fan? It will circulate the island breeze more evenly, making your favorite spot even more comfortable and roomy.
I hope these few tips spark some inspiration for home improvements to your island property this new year!
