Ahhh yes, the sunset on Sanibel Island. It’s one of the best parts about living here!
When I’m asked about the best place to watch the sunset, I always seem to blurt out “anywhere!” In fact, some of my favorite sunsets have been simply sitting in my backyard, admiring the afterglow parade of colors in the sky.
I realize that’s not helpful for those that are new to our islands. So, here are a few suggestions of places to watch the sunset on Sanibel Island.
Note, depending on the time of year, the sun sets in different locations. So give these a try in different seasons to see which is your favorite.
#1 Blind Pass Beach
Since the sun sets in the west, the most westerly spot on the island will naturally have some of the best sunset viewing opportunities. Know that the parking lot at Blind Pass isn’t large, so plan to arrive a little early and enjoy a beach walk while waiting.
#2 From The Gulf
Not everyone has access to a boat, which is why I didn’t list this first. BUT, for those that have boats, it’s one of the best ways to watch the sunset directly into the water without any obstructions or distractions. Just make sure your vessel has the proper navigation lights for a safe ride home after the sun has set.
#3 Bowman’s Beach
Bowman’s Beach is one of my favorite beaches, AND it’s great for watching sunsets on Sanibel Island! While there’s plenty of parking, I suggest arriving early and hooking a right when you get to the beach. Take a nice stroll to where no one else is around, and you have yourself the perfect, private spot for watching the sunset on Sanibel Island.
#4 Tarpon Bay Beach
You might not expect it, but the beach at the end of Tarpon Beach Road is the southernmost point of Sanibel Island. Therefore, it usually has less obstructions for watching the sunset to the west. It’s also a “less popular” sunset watching spot, so shhh…
#5 Traditions on the Beach
Traditions on the Beach is actually one of the few beachfront restaurants on Sanibel Island. You can watch the sky change colors as you dine, or stroll down to where the sand meets the water to toast another beautiful sunset on Sanibel!

Sunset Cruises
I mentioned that a boat is one of the best ways to watch a sunset on Sanibel Island. Don’t worry if you don’t have a boat, you can catch one of our area sunset cruise options!
The Causeway
While not technically “on Sanibel” the Causeway Islands are a popular spot for people to pull over and watch the sunset behind Sanibel Island.
