It may come as no surprise to hear that Sanibel Island received the “Gold” Bicycle Friendly Community Award by the League of American Bicyclists in December 2018. However, we were surprised to find out only one other community in Florida has achieved this status!
That’s right, Sanibel joins the ranks of the Villages community as the only two Florida communities to achieve the gold status by the league. Way to go Sanibel!
Sanibel Shared Use Path
The island’s 26-miles of Shared Use Path is a prized feature of the Sanibel community. A number of our local organizations have and continue to chip in to support the path that offers a safe place for bicyclists and pedestrians to move about the island.
The Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclists applauded Sanibel’s Shared Use Path efforts saying, “We are encouraged by the growing number of leaders who see bicycling as a way to build more vibrant, healthy, sustainable and connected communities.”
Gaining Status
Sanibel first joined the ranks of the Bicycle Friendly Community with a “Bronze” designation in 2010, followed by the upgrade to “Silver” status in 2014. We’re thrilled to once again improve to “Gold” just four years later. Now, we have our sights set on the “Platinum” level in 2022!
