McCallion & McCallion Donates Pigeon Plum for Sanibel Arbor Day

Wait, isn’t Arbor Day in April? Yes, it is!

National Arbor Day is usually celebrated on the last Friday in April. However, many states observe Arbor Day on different dates throughout the year based on the best tree-planting times in that area.

Did You Know…?

Fun Fact #1: The Florida State Tree is the Sabal Palm.

Fun Fact #2: Florida celebrates Arbor Day on the third Friday in January. Arbor Day brings environmental awareness and education about conservation efforts that keep our planet healthy and beautiful. In particular, Arbor Day focuses on the planting of trees!

Each year, Sanibel participates in Arbor Day by planting a new tree. This year, we sponsored the cost of the tree that was provided by SCCF’s Native Landscapes & Garden Center. It is an honor that the City thought of us as the perfect organization to sponsor the tree planting because of our passion for preserving our island’s unique landscape and the many articles we write on the topic.

What’s A Pigeon Plum?

Well, we’re glad you asked! The tree that is planted is a medium-sized shade tree called the Pigeon Plum (Coccoloba diversifolia). The tree can grow 40 inches high, and is often multi-trunked, forming a round vase shape as they mature.

The pigeon plum produces a white flower that serves as a nectar plant for butterflies and bees. The fruits ripen in early Winter, providing an important food source for birds and small animals.

Where Can You See It?

This year’s Arbor Day tree is planted at the City’s Community Park Preserve, 2231 Periwinkle Way. You can see it from the hiking trail! We hope you stop by it the next time you are out enjoying the great outdoors.

Sanibel Arbor Day – Special Dedication

Each year since 1989, the City of Sanibel plants a tree in honor of a local or historical figure as part of its Arbor Day celebration. This year’s planting is dedicated to Dee Serage Century for her 37-years of dedicated service as an environmental educator and advocate with the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF).

Sanibel’s City Manager describes Dee as an “Environmental Warrior.” Amongst other things, Dee formed SCCF’s Landscaping for Wildlife Program, which you might recognize the plaque (below) on properties around the island. Are you interested in having an SCCF staff member visit your home to provide information and advice about making your landscape safe for wildlife? More information can be found on their website linked here.
