Top 3 Best Beaches for Shelling on Sanibel Island

It’s hard to choose the best beach for shelling on Sanibel since the entire island is a mecca for seashell enthusiasts.

But if we had to choose, we think Lighthouse Beach, Blind Pass Beach, and Tarpon Bay Road Beach are some of the best for shelling on Sanibel, here’s why…

Lighthouse Beach Sanibel

Located on the east end of the island, Lighthouse beach lands a number of unique shells that get washed into the bay from the Gulf. Monitoring the tides and wind direction will help you find the rare shells you seek for your collection. Note, Lighthouse beach is probably the busiest beach on the island. So, expect a lot of competition at all times of the day searching for your Sanibel treasure.

Blind Pass Beach

Head to the opposite end of the island and you’ll find Blind Pass Beach just before you cross into Captiva Island. As water rushes through Blind Pass from the Gulf, shells collect on both shorelines, Blind Pass Beach on Sanibel, and Turner Beach on Captiva. Both are great places to scour the shoreline for a prized possession. Again, wind direction, tides, and weather will dictate the shelling conditions at Blind Pass. Lucky for you, there are usually fewer folks at Blind Pass than Lighthouse Beach, mainly due to the longer drive and limited parking.

Tarpon Beach Road

Maybe you’ve noticed a theme with the first two locations being at opposite ends of the island. That’s why we chose the very middle of the island for our third location. You see, when the winds and storms come from the South, beaches that face directly south, like the one at Tarpon Beach Road, will see an increased number of shells on the shore. The further you walk from the public parking areas, the better chance you’ll have of finding unique shells – this goes for any beach access point.
