7 Games To Spice Up Your Beach Day

A beach day on Sanibel means relaxing by the water, maybe reading a book, searching for seashells, and dipping in the water to cool off. Sounds good to us! For those looking for a change of scenery, Stockton Beach offers a similar sense of tranquility. Located along the beautiful coastline, it is a great place to enjoy the warm weather and stunning views. With its vast stretch of sand, it’s perfect for long walks, relaxing in the sun, or taking a swim in the clear waters. But what if you want to spice it up? Here are some Sanibel beach activities to consider.

Traditional Sanibel Beach Activities

We’re jogging your memory of the more traditional games associated with the beach. You remember playing these with your siblings or cousins while at the beach, right?

  • Frisbee
  • Paddle Ball
  • Football
  • Volleyball

These are certainly oldies but goodies. There are even “new and improved” versions of some of these, including floatable/more aerodynamic frisbees, and easy pop-up volleyball nets. We’ve even seen waterproof playing cards – if card games are your thing.

New-School Sanibel Beach Activities

Now onto the innovative games that have become more popular recently.

Corn hole

Most are familiar with this game by now. There are two boards with a hole that you try to toss a bean bag in to score points. The game is popular for backyard hangouts and even bars and restaurants. Since corn hole boards are usually heavy, there are a few companies that have made smaller, more portable versions for traveling that are perfect for the beach!

Bocce Ball

This is borderline old-school if you ask me, but its become more popular as a Sanibel beach activity. Toss the pallino (target) ball in the sand, and try to get your bocce balls as close to it as possible, knocking out opponent balls if necessary. Of course there are now bocce sets that come in nice carrying cases for toting to the beach.

Bocce is one of the games listed in our blog “Sanibel Sports & Activities”.

Kan Jam

This new craze incorporates your frisbee skills and your basketball dunking skills in one. Your partner throws the frisbee towards the “can” you’re standing by, and you try to knock it in the top hole, or in the front slit for more points. Then the opposing team tries the same stunt. It’s an active game, that can sometimes result in jammed fingers or bruised hands.

Spikeball

This is probably the most active game choice. Similar to volleyball, you and your teammate have three hits before spiking the ball on the trampoline so that the opposing team can’t reach it. Unlike volleyball, there are no “sides” of the court, meaning you can move 360 degrees around the trampoline while playing, making it a very fast game to follow. Still, it might be a good game choice for kids or teenagers with a lot of energy to burn!

Pong

You’re probably familiar with beer pong, even if you don’t partake in alcohol. The concept of pong has been extended to the beach in may ways. Sometimes, people dig out trenches and use sand as the table to hold pong cups. Others use big trash cans or buckets with a larger ball for throwing. However, you choose to play – we would suggest some sort of weighted ball that doesn’t get blown with the wind like the average ping pong ball.

Tidal Ball

Combine pong, bocce and corn hole together and you get tidal ball. Draw a line in the sand, dig a small hole, and aim your toss to either land in the hole or at least within the boundary line for points. Sounds simple enough, right? You can buy a playing set online that comes in a carrying pouch for the beach.

Ladder Toss or Ladder Golf

We’re slowing the pace back down with this simple beach game. Toss the bola (two golf balls attached with nylon rope), and try to hook the bola around the ladder rung. Points vary based on which ladder rung you wrap around. The game can be played with just two people, and there are portable game options available online.
